In just 30.5 hours.....
Jul. 21st, 2003 03:29 pmAt some point during the weekend, I managed to be in Atlanta, Georgia for 26 hours or so.
In that time, I......
Attended a barbecue at Chez
arimathea
- Large amounts of MEATY MEAT WITH EXTRA MEATY GOODNESS! What could be bad about that?
Played Dance Dance Revolution, and enjoyed it
- At said barbecue, there was a Playstation 2, complete with DDRMAX, and a couple of foot pads. That was more fun than I realistically should have on a daily basis. The last time I played DDR at all was at Seattle Gameworks on 12 Sept. 2001, because I was stuck in Seattle and needed to take my mind off of things. This time around, I could apply a bit more concentration to the task, and it was free. Despite all preconceptions to the contrary, I actually have a small amount of rhythm, and I think I've found an exercise thing that I can do that won't bore me to tears. This has potential. I even already have the PS2.
Got to talk with
telynor and
arimathea
- Great people, interesting conversations, have to head down and visit more. 'nuff said.
Got to do large amounts of network geeking until 2am
- Another one of the attendees at said barbecue was staying over at the house as well, and we ended up geeking about network design and comparative feature sets between vendors until the wee hours. We traded tips for how to get privileged information out of various large router vendors. It was very fun and very geeky.
Went to Waffle House for the first time
- Um. Yeah. Waffle House. Well. Um. All-Star Breakfast. Couldn't finish. Too big. Ugh. Excuse me while I bore out my arteries now. Very tasty, though.
Saw the datacenter that hosts (and sources) a siginifcant chunk of the porn traffic in the US
- It's all boxes with lots of blinky lights, but then again, it always is. Such is the underlying banality of the 'Net. It never ceases to amuse me, though. I remember the first time seeing one of the Root DNS servers up close and personal. It was just a rackshelf-mounted Sun Sparcstation. Regardless of how important it was, from the outside, it was just another box with a light on the front, and a label stuck onto it. When I was reading Snow Crash, I couldn't stop visualizing boring brightly-lit gray-walled gray-tiled datacenters, where all the action in the virtual world was actually taking place. It puts things nicely into perspective.
Ran like the wind through Hartsfield airport
- I arrived at the airport 28 minutes before take-off. "one-half m v squared" takes on a whole new meaning when you are a non-small human being with a 20-lb. backpack barelling through the A-Councourse of ATL.
Bracketing that time, I was on an airplane for a total of 4.5 hours total flight time.
In that time, I......
Played around 100 hands of bridge versus my laptop.
- 3D Bridge deluxe for the Mac, to be precise. That was fun. I think I'd like to play bridge more, and actually against people, but I'm honestly quite scared of making a bid, and then having the person across the table eviscerating me for not knowing the BlackwoodJacobySteadmanNeimanMarcusCrosbyStillsNashYoung bidding convention. I may have to get over that, though. Bridge appears to be quite a bit of fun.
Not bad for 30.5 hours, all told.
