A Möbius chain of logic
Jun. 26th, 2009 07:06 pmI find it interesting how the term "personal responsibility" is used in political discourse. One of its most popular uses as of late appears to be shorthand for "The bad thing in question will never happen to me because I'm virtuous, and the people who it happens to clearly are not virtuous, because that bad thing only happens to non-virtuous people." The logic, it is strained.
I suppose this is because "take responsibility for your own actions, and reserve judgment on people, because bad things happen to good people all the time." isn't nearly as catchy.
There will always be the irresponsible among us, and those that would distance themselves from their actions in order to avoid consequences. I merely propose that that shouldn't be the default assumption when seeing someone who has fallen onto bad circumstances.
