So, today's winner in the first-clothing-out-of-the-drawer sweepstakes was black jeans, a darkish-beige t-shirt (from Arisia 2004, with the truly kick-ass Arthur Ganson art on it), and for an overshirt, a hawaiian shirt that's primarily black with green, brown and beige patterns on it.

Kind of "Gothic Hawaiian", all told.

I See A Great Need for a (preferably) alcoholic drink named a "Gothic Hawaiian".

Query: So, what would a drink named a "Gothic Hawaiian" look like? I'm talking ingredients, technique, presentation, the whole thing.

Absinthe served in half a coconut with a pineapple garnish and paper umbrella?

Must be a black paper umbrella

Of course it must be a black umbrella. And perhaps a swizzle stick topped with a gargoyle.

"Gothic" implies absinthe (or, at least, wormwood). "Hawaii" implies fruit.

Absinthe is a decent starting point, but it's a bit... obvious.

Therefore.

Gothic Hawaii

  • Gammel Dansk, 3cl (wormwood-spiced vodka)
  • Guava juice, 6 cl
  • Sprite or other carbonated lemonade
  • Candied java plum, 3-6 pcs
  • Ice, crushed

Pour vodka and fruit juice in a coctail shaker and mix vigourously. Strain into glass, to up with lemonade. Decorate with the candied java plum pieces.

NB, I have NO idea how it'd taste, but it contains wormwood and plants available in abunance in Hawaii. It should also be easy to make. There's cinnamon trees growing wild in H., so it'd be possible mixing in some cinnamon schnapps (Yukon, I think) with gold, for some Gothic decadence. Black available on special request.

Hawaiian - pineapple, coconut, banana, colourful umbrella.
bright colours: curacau blue, creme-de-menthe green, pisang ambon green, and their friends.

Gothic - black, dark-purple, red. Also high alcohol content, so a requirement of spirits.

so, Ingvar's black vodka (that would be salty liquorice vodka), with creme-de-menthe in a different layer, all in a tall cocktail glass. Two of my unfavouritest flavours, for that special gothy doom.

So here's the classic Blue Hawaiian:

Ingredients:

1 oz Light rum
2 oz Pineapple juice
1 oz Blue Curacao
1 oz Cream of coconut
1 slice Pineapple
1 Cherry
Mixing instructions:

Blend light rum, blue curacao, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut with one cup ice in an electric blender at high speed. Pour contents into a highball glass. Decorate with the slice of pineapple and a cherry.

----

You could add something to it to make it darker (black vodka, perhaps? Cranberry juce to make it purple?) and a little black paper umbrella, and spear the fruit with a plastic sword, because sharp things are definitely goff. :)

Suggestion:

Tia Maria and black vodka, served in a coconut shell, with grated dried coconut sprinkled on top and a black umbrella.

Should even taste OK.

No, no, NO! Hawaii is the home of the U.S.'s only native coffee, Kona. Therefore, we're looking for a kahlua (which isn't Hawaiian, but sounds it) based drink.

As coffee really doesn't go with pineapple, but does do well with aromatic oils, add the cream of coconut. Rum is the logical choice for the basic underlying booze.

Serve in a Suffering Bastard mug. (http://www.podcastingnews.com/details/feeds.feedburner.com/tikibartv/view.htm) (Scroll down to "Episode 2")

What about coconut-flavored rum?

Hmm... I'd go with an already named drink and modify. One that immediately comes to mind is "suffering bastard", a favorite of polynesian lounge bars everywhere. Since we're going for gothic, the thing to do would be to somehow drop the 'bastard' part and emphasize the 'suffering'.

A suffering bastard is:
shot gin
shot rum
1/2 of citrus, lime or orange depending
dash bitters
half again ginger ale
over ice

For increased suffering, double the bitters and citrus and lose the ginger ale? Maybe also use overproof rum? Serve in one suitably grim tiki mug, with skull swizzle. Voila, Gothic Hawaiian.

This is completely unrelated.
You're going to NYC this weekend, right?
I have some items that I need returned to a certain someone.
Nothing real big. Would you mind terribly if asked you at as their currier?

The thing that immediately popped into mind was an absinth martini, in a martini glass, with a slice of blood orange on a stick in it.

I'd choose a top-shelf traditionally-distilled absinthe, prepared in the traditional Parisian manner (e.g., with ice water dripped slowly over a sugar cube into the glass) and garnished with a small shriveled sun-is-drowning-in-its-own-clotted-blood bit of blood orange.

Alternatively, for the more vulgar club set, you could mix red absinth(e) and blue curacao, yielding a lovely violet confabulation.
