a) 718 has a shorter prime factorization than 212. b) Thus, out of 212 and 718, 212 has the Maximal Factorization. c) In general, more women than men can be expected to use products made by Max Factor.
The density of taller buildings in 212 outranks those in 718, as wel as the density of day-time Type A aggressive salesmen/CEOs/lawyers/editors/punks/etc. Between sheer testosterone emissions and phallic buildings, I'll have to say 212 wins it for being macho.
212 is more macho because it is the ultimate alpha area code. When Bell Labs (the people that gave you Unix) came up with the first area codes, they assigned them based on the likelihood of dialing versus the amount of effort the mechanical switching equipment in local offices would have to use in order to rotate the numbers. In other words, 2-1-2 is two notches up and back down the dial, one notch up and down, and two more notches up and down. Equipment dialing this over and over is less likely to fall apart versus equipment dialing 909 over and over (don't forget that dialing zero was ten notches up and down).
In fact, look at the lowest area codes based on the populations they still address:
212: originally NYC, now the island of Manhattan; 213: downtown Los Angeles 312: originally Chicago, now the area within The Loop 313: Detroit 412: Pittsburgh
What's funny is how fast this falls apart: 413 is Western Mass, an area code still not in fear of being broken up. Think more on the first digit, even if there is a zero:
202: Washington DC (you're less likely to dial a sensitive hotline by accident with the zero in there); 203: originally Connecticut, now the the metro New York portion of CT making a triangle from Danbury, New Haven and Greenwich; 204: Manitoba (wow, that final digit is really least significant. The old phone company was seriously little-endian.) 302: Delaware 303: Denver
