May. 26th, 2002 09:21 amLast night, sitting at home and feeling bored, I assembled my flute after a two-month hiatus. Mostly, this was to re-familiarize myself with the instrument, as I intend to start actually taking individual lessons on a regular basis soon.
I started going through some basic tunes I remembered from when I tried taking group lessons.
Three Blind Mice.....check.
The Can-Can.....check.
The Cuckoo Song....check.
Then things started getting a bit weird. I started rattling off tunes that I'd only ever played before on the piano, working from half-remembered sheet music.
Piano Man.....?
Hatikva.....??
The Columbia University Alma Mater......??!?
And then things got certifiably odd. I was playing stuff by ear that I'd never played on any instrument before.
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.......????!
Bin There, Dun That........?!??!
The first few bars of Jethro Tull's rendition of Bouree!?!?!!!!!
I can only imagine this is what an amnesiac feels like when the memories start coming back. I felt compelled to keep playing. "Wow, that was cool! Quick! Try something else!"
I played for a solid hour. I was so incredibly happy. I still am.
