Yesterday, I received a particularly odd (but welcome) compliment.

You deserve the space that you take up.

The explanation given was that I may be an un-small and un-quiet human being, but at least I make good use of the space, physical and psychological, that I inhabit.

It's late, and I'm now entirely sure how to describe it any better than that, but I believe it bears mentioning.

As compliments go, I consider that one of the best. Then again I consider myself a space-taking woman: one who inhabits more than what I've had defined for me as my share, rather defiantly. To be told that it is worth while for others and not just the self -- is a big thing.
