Something not to do....
Jan. 27th, 2002 01:46 pmDo not,
under any circumstances,
no matter how entertaining you think it might be,
no matter how much you think you're doing it in good humor,
even if you actually have a more informed opinion and mean it only in jest,
...describe Burning Man as an "over-privileged geek raver summer camp" when there's someone in range who's the slightest bit insecure about their participation in the event.
It will only end in pain, suffering, and thirty minutes of tedious semantic arguments.
Don't say I didn't warn you.
(Disclaimer: no, I have never gone to Burning Man, and have no intention of ever going)

o I gotta know
Date: 2002-01-28 09:12 am (UTC)and, er, was it possibly a comment by someone who apparently skipped arisia because said someone hates being identified as a geek?
Re: o I gotta know
Date: 2002-01-28 10:37 am (UTC)While I don't know if the argument was made by the same person who didn't attend Arisia, a small part of me wishes it was, as the irony would be just too beautiful.
For the record
Date: 2002-02-08 06:39 am (UTC)And, also for the record, apparently I was mistaken in thinking that my cousin didn't go to Arisia because she didn't want to be identified as a geek. She self-identifies as a massage geek. She skipped Arisia out of simple lack of interest, apparently.

*giggle**giggle*
*laugh*
I can *so* see that happening. Wish I'd been there. *snicker* *giggle*
At any rate, that description sounds....accurate. *cough*
for the record...

It is an exercise in futility to convince Elias that some things really can't be succcinctly summed up by stringing together catch phrases until they sound clever.
Stories always tell you more about the storyteller than what they THINK they're describing.
Re: for the record...
Date: 2002-02-02 01:38 pm (UTC)I'm completely with you on that one.
Re: for the record...
Date: 2002-02-02 04:15 pm (UTC)Even though I probably agree with whoever got temperamental about your flippant description, it's not something worth getting too bothered over. Burning Man defies description every time *I* try, and I've been going to it for years.
