And now, on stage for the first time.....
Apr. 8th, 2005 11:08 pmI just got back from my first performance as part of Honorable Menschen, the a-cappella group I've alluded to previously.
That. Was. Awesome.
The two mini-performances we did at Harvard Hillel went off really well, even with horrible acoustics in the first location. The group was tight, the music clicked, and it was an immense amount of fun. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that my heart rate stayed level, presumably after my body (finally, after two months,) realized that the fight-or-flight response was somewhat useless on-stage.
Gather 'round, though, for this is what I'll remember, and I want you to remember that this is what I'll remember:
The encore song that we did has a "vocal percussion" part. Yes, that would be the whole "human beatbox" thing, although perhaps with an emphasis on being more drum-like than not. So, I've been practicing the part for the past couple of weeks, sitting in front of my monitor with a past recording of the song, adding in beats where I thought it would work, and wiping off the monitor after every third playback or so (try doing vocal percussion; you'll understand).
Tonight, while performing the song, I saw people in the audience grooving and bopping along to the song, with their eyes closed, feeling the beat. I'm pretty sure that part of the reason for that was the beats I was laying down.
This is as close as I'll ever likely get to playing an instrument in a band.
I get it, now.
