Saying "but I could put all of this money toward (larger nebulous financial thing)" is self-defeating, because you undermine the incentive to actually save for a goal, by taking money out from under yourself.
I've started actually keeping a ledger book with various budgets in it (toy fund, car fund, travel fund, etc.), in order to keep track of how much I saved, and how much I can spend from each fund.
Thus starts the journey into anal-retentiveness. How unsettling.
